What's all this about?
There are several types of shoe called "barefoot" or "minimalist" or sometimes "functional" or even "anatomical". Regardless of what they are marketed as, they all generally share the same traits.
Zero Drop heel - A shoe with a "Zero Drop Heel" removes the unnecessary lift at the heel common to most ordinary shoes. In the old days, only dress shoes and certain work shoes had a raised heel. Sports and casual shoes had flat soles. Raising the heel in athletic and casual shoes was a marketing gimmick started in the 1970's to make athletic and running shoes feel more like the work shoes people were people were accustomed to wear during the day. Work shoes and dress shoes serve a purpose for sure, but they are very hard on your feet, knees and back due to their shape and raised heel. While a heel is a useful feature for people who climb telephone poles, ride horses, like to drive motorcycles or spend a lot of time on ladders, they are not very useful for walking or running. "Zero Drop" refers to there being no drop in height from the heel to the toe, the way your feet are shaped normally.

Lightweight - Because of their zero drop design and minimal barriers between your feet and the ground they are generally much lighter than ordinary shoes. On effect of this is that it makes you feel like you aren't wearing anything on your feet allowing your body to move as it would naturally without being confined by ordinary shoes. For instance running and trail sandals are the bare minimum, offering super low weight and just enough protection for your sole. Even most of our winter shoes are less than half the weight of ordinary winter footwear without sacrificing warmth or protection. Think about this the next time you take a trip and are getting close to your baggage limit. AND for sports people, this is a huge win as weight is generally the enemy of performance.

Wide Toe Box - Give your toes a little room to breathe. A wide toe box is essential for the development of good balance, strong feet and, most of all, comfort. Throughout history there has been a harmful tendency to make women's feet appear as small as possible for beauty or fashion reasons. Even without that, largely the design of shoes throughout history has leaned toward sleeker and tighter profiles that squeeze the feet of the wearer into unnatural and harmful position causing discomfort and pain, lowered blood circulation, bunions, hammer toe and many other awful things. Our shoes have plenty of room for your toes and are shaped like an actual foot. Giving plenty of lateral movement so your feet have a solid, anchored/ connection with the ground and over time they will even spread which helps your entire body.

Very thin, but protective sole - Fun fact: Your feet have more sensory nerve endings per square centimeter than anywhere else on your body. For everyone, especially young children with developing brains, the stimulation received from these nerves are as important as your hands... or any other part of your body for neural development, spacial awareness, balance and reaction time. The ordinary shoe puts 2.5 to 4cm of foam, polyurethane, rubber and other stuff between your foot and the ground, essentially blinding your feet as to where they are in the world and causing them to be weak. Total distance from the ground to your foot in our shoes is typically 6mm-12mm depending on the purpose of the shoe so you can feel the world around you and feed your brain with valuable sensory information. Your feet are more than capable of handling nearly any terrain, but more than likely they're out of shape. Let's fix that.
Flexible - You may have seen pictures on the internet of barefoot shoe companies showing off the fact that they can roll their shoe up in a ball, or maybe twist it like a corkscrew. Usually accompanied with the words "Flexible!" Why is a super flexible shoe a benefit over ordinary "not-as" flexible shoes? Hmmm? A flexible shoe allows your foot to spread a little and loads your tendons when you step creating a natural recoil, putting a spring in your step. More rigid and overly-supportive shoes restrict the movement of your feet weakening your muscles and fascia. Our shoes are some of the most flexible and comfortable shoes on the market. Wearing them everyday will make your feet, ankles and calfs stronger and less likely to be injured. In fact, our shoes are so flexible that you can pack them in a gym back or suitcase anywhere and they barely take up any room! Try this with your normal shoes.
European quality and high end materials
Sustainable and high tech materials - Most of the brands we carry are completely commited to vegan materials, cruelty free products or even 100% recycled materials in some cases. While this is great news for the environment, most of the reasons for their excitement is because they spent a lot of money and effort on materials research necessary to create soles this thin that offer great traction and very high protection and puncture resistance. For the upper materials, one company has pioneered the use of recycled coffee grounds, not because it's eco friendly (although that's nice) but because it produced a stronger, lighter, breathable and more water repellent (and attractive) material for the shoe's upper. Environmentally friendly not because it's cool, but because it's better.
